Matthew 24 - Part 10
We are down to the latter part of verse 6: “...see that ye be not troubled: for all [these things] must come to pass, but the end is not yet.”
See [horao:G3708]
The term, “see” is generally translated as such, and to a lesser degree, as “take heed,” “behold,” and “perceive,” as the following passages illustrate:
Matthew 16:6 states: "Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed [horao:G3708]
and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
Luke 12:15 offers this warning: "And he said unto them, Take heed [horao:G3708], and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth."
And 1 Peter 1:8 acknowledges: "Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see [horao:G3708] him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:"
The object of this word, "see" is "that ye be [not] troubled..." The Lord is comforting His people by this phrase, along with the next one: "...for all [these things] must come to pass…"
That Ye Be [Not] Troubled [throeo:G2360]
This expression, “that ye be troubled” is only found in the parallel verse in Mark 13:7, along with 2 Thessalonians 2:2 which states: "That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled [throeo:G2360]
neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand."
The phrase, "For all [these things]" is referring back to those who promote "deception" by their false doctrines, along with "wars and rumours of wars."
Must [dei:G1163] Come To Pass [ginomai:G1096]
Besides the parallel passages in the other Gospel accounts, the two words, "must," and "come to pass" are found, for example, in the following verses:
Verse 54 of Matthew 26:53-54 renders these terms as "it must" and "be": "Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? {54} But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must [dei:G1163] be?" [ginomai:G1096]
Acts 1:16 translates these terms as, "must" and "was": "Men and brethren, this scripture must [dei:G1163] needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was [ginomai:G1096] guide to them that took Jesus."
Summary: Even though we are living in this prolonged “day of judgment,” following the Great Tribulation and all of Matthew 24 has been fulfilled, except for “enduring to the end,” verse 6 is anticipating that the events spoken of in this chapter must occur.
Lord willing, we will pick up our examination of verse 6 in our next newsletter.
